Fast metabolism or slow metabolism? Secret to weight loss or
curse of weight gain?
Popular opinion assumes that slim people are blessed with a
fast metabolism while overweight
people suffer from a slow metabolism. The problem with
these conclusions is the suggestion that there is nothing
we can do to control our metabolism. But what if we could?
What if we could increase metabolism simply by mixing in
some positive change to our daily routine?
Metabolism is a series of processes in your body that
converts food to energy. The rate of your metabolism is a
measurement of how fast your body uses energy to burn calories.
While we can't control how many calories the body uses to aid
in healing or to make our hearts beat, we can affect the rate
that we burn energy during physical activity and food
digestion. We can actually burn 100's of extra calories a day
just by making minor adjustments to what we do and what we eat.
And, as a side benefit, we'll have lots more energy and we'll
feel great!
So let's develop an action plan. First, we need to find easy
ways to increase our activities. Too tired? Speed up your
metabolism and enjoy your new found get up and go.
To jump start metabolism, start by examining your weekly
schedule. The idea is to change your new routines into a habit.
If you feel overwhelmed by the prospect of a schedule overhaul,
here's something to get you motivated…
By exercising in short bursts throughout the day, say 10 –
15 minutes every few hours, you can speed up your metabolism
and burn up the extra fat. Find ways to build this into your
day.
Try to work your new found energy into a plan. Save some
private time for yourself, especially on the weekend. Then
invest that time by walking or swimming, or golfing – whatever
you like. Better yet, find a friend to go with you. Gardening,
car washing, house cleaning, and mall-walking also count!
During the week consider getting up early 2 times a week and
take a walk. At work, find excuses to take the stairs as often
as you can. Walk to lunch.
Step two is
even easier. Think food.
Certain 'metabolism foods' will actually increase
metabolism, so it's as simple eating foods that speed
metabolism and eliminating 'bad' foods such as those high in
sugar or corn syrup, saturated fats, or food low in fiber. As
an added note, not only will these types of 'bad' foods cause
weight gain, they will also make you feel tired and lethargic.
And that will seriously cut into your activity program.
Foods that speed metabolism include lean proteins. Proteins
require your body to work harder at digestion, using more
calories in the process. Calcium rich dairy products such as
fat-free milk or low-fat yogurt tend to increase the rate of
fat absorption. Vegetables work to increase metabolism.
Asparagus in particular promotes the breakdown of fat. Beans
and dark leafy greens like spinach and broccoli stimulate
muscle and speed up metabolism.
Experts consistently stress the importance of eating more
frequently. Now of course this is not an endorsement of eating
more, just better. By eating every 3 to 4 hours, your body is
constantly burning or digesting that food. The result – faster
metabolism and more calories burned.
While eating more frequently works to speed up metabolism,
when you skip meals or starve yourself, your metabolism defends
itself by burning more slowly and conserving fat.
People burn calories at different rates. Someone with a fast
metabolism will burn more calories than someone with a slow
metabolism. Certain factors will affect metabolism including
age, physical condition and activity level, age, and overall
health.
